Philosophy

MESA’s Garden Studio has designed and supervised the construction of some of the most beautiful private gardens in Texas. Under the direction of Mary Ellen Cowan, this studio is an intimate venture within the larger corporate context at MESA. Mary Ellen’s work has been extensively published. Her philosophy concerning each residential project is threefold: one, work with the homeowner and architect to unify the interior and exterior concepts; two, design the interface between architecture and nature; three, capture the spirit of the site within the design.

Approach

The Garden Studio’s work includes a heavy dose of client communication as well as a commitment to privacy. Many of MESA’s residential garden projects have been designed for philanthropists and city stakeholders who enjoy and require meditative, private, natural settings at home because of outside demands. The Garden Studio’s approach to each project is as straightforward as its philosophy: respect each client’s project as if it were your own; collaborate with the owner, architect, interior designer, artist, engineer, and contractor; work within budget; and advocate for the client. Each project is well-crafted and intensely supervised in the office and on site.
