Environmental Education Studio
Philosophy
MESA’s Environmental Education Studio believes that a positive relationship with nature occurs through observation and hands-on experience. Interacting with nature in an urban setting is as important as an inspiring view in a national park. Building a connection with the land, whether in a backyard garden or old growth forest, may encourage our willingness to explore and protect the environment at many scales. MESA’s Environmental Education Studio collaborates with educational outreach organizations, scientists, architects, and others to design county campgrounds, private outdoor education facilities, as well as nature preserves in rural settings or within the urban fabric. These projects encourage children and adults to appreciate the natural world.
Approach
The Environmental Education Studio at MESA processes each project through a system of environmental and cultural overlays. A multi-layered synthesis of land patterns, waterways, ecosystems, history, and other influences encourage a broad awareness of a project’s cultural and ecological implications. The story of the site is then expressed through an artful application of regionally appropriate forms and indigenous materials, revealing lessons about geology, plants, wildlife, and people. MESA’s Environmental Education Studio designs outdoor facilities and programs promoting awareness, respect, and stewardship of the land.
